President’s Welcome

Welcome to the Foundation for Orthopedic Trauma! The FOT is the US chapter of the Osteosynthesis and Trauma Care (OTC) Foundation, an international consortium dedicated to the advancement of orthopedic trauma care. Our focus continues to be on education, research and humanitarian efforts.

The FOT began in 2004 with just 12 members at our first annual meeting, but we have grown steadily and currently have 94 members. While we are proud of the growth of our organization, we prefer to grow responsibly. As a smaller organization, we believe that all members have a responsibility to be not just active in name, but in practice as well. Newer members are strongly encouraged to become involved in our educational opportunities and committee work.

Our annual meetings tend to be high spirited affairs with sessions directed toward research and newer trends in practice and technology. Our love for advancing our field and the camaraderie of the membership tends to positively affect the tenor of the meeting. One of our favorite sessions remains the case presentations made by resident participants.

In addition to our annual meeting, we hold dissection courses for residents throughout the year. Each course is typically focused on either the upper extremity, the lower extremity or the pelvis and acetabulum. The expert faculty members of these courses are dedicated, experienced, patient surgeons and educators. These courses offer close, low pressure, small group educational opportunities that regularly receive superlative reviews from participants.

The FOT Research Committee has vetted and awarded approximately 2.5 million dollars in grants since our inception. The completed projects are typically presented at our annual meeting upon completion, but have also been presented at other national meetings like the OTA and the AAOS annual meetings. FOT funded projects have also led to a multitude of publications.

Our humanitarian efforts have traditionally focused on Haiti and have included our member surgeons visiting, lecturing and operating in Haiti. We have also welcomed Haitian surgeons to our annual meeting and some have become valuable international members. Currently, we are working together with Haitian surgeons and Orthopaedic Relief Services International (ORSI) to organize and provide a Grand Rounds type lecture series to orthopedic residents in Haiti.

Who are we?

Incorporated in 2004, the Foundation for Orthopedic Trauma with the active assistance of its members works consistently towards fulfilling its mission. We directly educate through national courses, events, symposia, and forums.  We support research with grants and we mentor through educational courses and humanitarian missions.

What do we do?

FOT is a chapter of the Osteosynthesis and Trauma Care Foundation (OTCF) which in addition to national opportunities affords our members international opportunities. FOT runs three dissection approach courses per year as well as an annual trauma symposium. Additionally, the FOT holds update meetings during AAOS and OTA Annual meetings. FOT offers Research grants on an annual cycle basis. Additionally, FOT sponsors its members to attend Humanitarian mission and education travel to Haiti.
